Am I Enlightened Or Just Really Pissed Off?

From Chogyam Trungpa:
EMOTIONS AS THEY ARE
"In the practice of meditation, we neither encourage emotions nor repress them. By seeing them clearly, by allowing them to be as they are, we no longer permit them to serve as a means of entertaining and distracting us. Thus, they become the inexhaustible energy that fulfills egoless action".

Which got me to thinking, how do I know when I'm "...fueling egoless action" or just being an @sshole? You know, there's people (okay, mainly NY'ers...) who fear getting in to Buddhism 'cuz they don't want to "Lose their edge and go soft", despite appreciating the newly-won sanity of their friends who've gotten in to meditation.

So which is it? R we getting truly righteous or just ridiculous? Are we serenely finishing our lite beers and leaving the bar before the good brawls start as our friends laugh at us behind our backs? Do we need the edge? Can we have our cake...and smash it too?

Oooh, I like-y. So, tell me more...inquiring minds wanna know--if they're the same, what makes one action pure and one harmful?

I thought the correct answer was/is "Intention goofball" but I wanted to make you spell it. So, just so I get this straight--when you're out drinking for instance and you get going a bit, and someone pisses you off and you go after them--how do your actions appear to them? Or for that matter, how do your actions appear to you?

I think I'm with bindu on this one.

And Dana, this one comes from you--

Aren't they the same thing? Just karmic energy spinning off into the cosmos. Who are we to judge our karma? Who are we to judge the karmic effects of the people on the plane? There are ramifications there more numerous than we can imagine. The action is neither 'right' nor 'wrong;' it just is. Action. nothing more.

I only say that because hanging out in bars isn't very much fun if there are no fights involved.

If we only realized "nothing more" we wouldn't need them. Until then, until we are no longer attached to *trying* to perform egoless action and just, ya know, perform egoless actions, we might as well use some guidance.

"inquiring minds wanna know--if they're the same, what makes one action pure and one harmful?", so if you hit someone with good intentions is karma accrued?

"If someone on the plane shot and killed the terrorist...lives of many were saved at the expense of one". So its a kind of compassionate utilitarionism=the good of the many outweigh the one?

BTW, I really appreciate everyone stepping up and throwing down your ideas/inspirations. I'm not sitting back here judging, more like learning!

My personal level of interest in this quote really goes to my curiosity/fasnination/frustration with the real meaty kleshas/disturbing thoughts which tie me up and beat me sensless.

So, yeah in the realm of one-taste I know theoretically that its all just images bouncing off the clear reflection of the dharmakaya--pure, unstained innate wakeful nature.

But, it still trips me out and trips me up when my mind/emotions/thoughts appear and before I know it I'm acting them out--not "allowing them to be as they are". Which BTW, echoes one of my all time fave quotes from one Indian master (Tilopa) to his student (Naropa) "Do not imagine, deliberate, meditate, act but be at rest".

I mean, there it is. Don't stir a mud puddle and you won't get murky water. However I constantly have my digits in there/me mucking around.

So I posted Trungpa's quote to find out "How do you really deal when someone gets in your face?". I mean, how fine is that line btw intention/action?

I agree that the gross level diff btw right/wrong/black/white actions is intention. But how do you know when your intention is good/pure/helpful and when you're just lashing out in defense?

Brings to mind the parabal of Christ and the tax collectors (?), he supposedly manifested wrathful, compassionate action and spanked some booty, right?

But I'm more like the tax collectors in this case and less like Christ. Do I just not act? How do I know when my practice is mature enough to not doubt the integrity of my actions?
